Recognition Needed: China and Unfair Treatment of Native Americans

China calls for acknowledging the “unjust history of Native Americans” in a scathing rebuke to Washington. This comes after a report by the US Department of the Interior revealed the deaths of at least 973 Native American children in the government’s abusive boarding school system.

According to Lin Jian, spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, the US must address its global human rights abuses and come to terms with the dark chapter of Native American history. The probe found graves at 65 of over 400 US boarding schools, which were established to assimilate Native American children into white society through force.

Children at these schools endured sickness and abuse over a 150-year period ending in 1969. Lin emphasized that the US must learn from history, reflect on its actions, and address its own human rights violations and interference in other countries’ internal affairs.
