The Republican-led House Oversight and Accountability Committee has launched an investigation into the involvement of the White House in the plea deal reached with the alleged masterminds of the 9/11 terror attacks. Chairman James Comer sent a letter to President Biden seeking information on the pretrial agreements with the defendants: Khalid Shaikh Mohammad, Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin ‘Attash, and Mustafa Ahmed Adam al Hawsawi.
The Pentagon confirmed the plea deal, which involved the defendants pleading guilty to conspiracy and murder charges in exchange for a life sentence. Families of 9/11 victims expressed skepticism about the deal’s healing potential, with one stating, “He’s not going to … say, ‘I’m sorry.'”
The Oversight investigation aims to determine the White House’s role in the deal, with concerns raised about transparency. Rep. Comer criticized the administration for distancing itself from the decision. Sen. Tom Cotton introduced legislation to nullify the deal and keep the detainees at Guantanamo.
This news has been a “gut punch” for victims’ families, many of whom are seeking full transparency and a sense of justice in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
