Haniyeh to be Buried in Qatar
Qatar will hold funeral ceremonies for Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Iran. Haniyeh had been living in Doha with other Hamas members and will be buried in Lusail after funeral prayers at Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque. Hamas confirmed the attendance of Arab and Islamic leaders at the event.
Israel has not directly commented on the attack in Tehran that killed Haniyeh. The organization, along with Iran, has blamed Israel for the incident. Haniyeh traveled to Iran for President Masoud Pezeshkian’s swearing-in ceremony before the attack.
Biden Says US Committed to Defending Israel Against Iran
US President Joe Biden assured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of supporting Israel’s security against threats from Iran. The call followed the killings of Haniyeh and Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut, prompting threats of retaliation from Iran and Hezbollah.
Biden, along with Vice President Kamala Harris, discussed de-escalation efforts in the region and reiterated the US commitment to Israel’s security against Iranian threats. The President also mentioned deploying new defense mechanisms to protect Israel from ballistic missiles and drones.
