Polytechnic graduates have long been subjected to discrimination due to the disparity between their certificates and those of university graduates, hindering their opportunities in the job market. The recent release of a new scheme of service by the Federal Government for the sub-sector has sparked controversies among stakeholders, exacerbating the issue, as reported by IYABO LAWAL.
The dichotomy between BSc and HND has created a hierarchy in employment, with BSc holders often receiving preferential treatment. This discrimination extends to the public sector, where HND holders face limitations in career progression compared to their BSc counterparts.
In an effort to address this issue, the Ninth National Assembly passed a bill to end the dichotomy, but it was not signed into law by the President. Recently, the NBTE issued a White Paper outlining a new scheme of service for polytechnics, which has been met with criticism from stakeholders.
The document introduces changes that further disadvantage HND holders and fail to align with global standards. Stakeholders, including ASUP, have rejected the document, calling for its suspension and revision to address the contentious issues.
The controversy surrounding the new scheme of service highlights the ongoing struggle for equality and recognition of polytechnic education in Nigeria.
