Forced sterilization victims demand ¥15 million in damages

Victims of Japan’s former eugenics law are demanding ¥15 million each in government compensation, as stated by their legal representatives on Friday. Naoto Sekiya, a lawyer for the Tokyo plaintiffs, shared during a press conference that individuals who underwent forced sterilization surgery should be granted ¥15 million, while their spouses should receive ¥5 million.

Sekiya emphasized that compensation should be awarded, even in cases where the victims or their partners have passed away since filing for compensation. He stressed the importance of providing a fair amount of compensation to all those impacted by the outdated eugenics law, including those who underwent abortions as a result of the law.

The proposed relief bill is expected to address these issues and ensure that families of deceased victims are also eligible for compensation. It demonstrates a step towards acknowledging and rectifying the injustices faced by individuals affected by the eugenics law in Japan.
