Peace Prevails in Kurram, Pakistan
Following a week of violent clashes between rival tribes in Kurram, Pakistan that left 46 dead and nearly 200 injured, a ceasefire has been established after a meeting between authorities and tribal elders. The grand jirga, held in Parachinar, resulted in an agreement for peace until October 5.
Kurram, located in northwestern Pakistan near the border with Afghanistan, has a history of sectarian conflict between Shia and Sunni communities. The recent clashes stemmed from a land dispute between Shia-majority and Sunni-majority tribes. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has called for peaceful negotiations to end the violence.
