Kenta Izumi, leader of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP), is gearing up for re-election in the party’s leadership race next month. Former leader Yukio Edano has also thrown his hat in the ring for the election, set to take place on either Sept. 16 or Sept. 23.
In his remarks to reporters, Izumi, who took over as CDP leader in November 2021, highlighted the need for the party to pave the way for a change in government. The upcoming election will be crucial in determining the direction of the opposition party.
While Izumi faces some criticism from within the party for delays in forming a coalition with other opposition groups, potential challengers like former Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and Lower House member Kazuhiko Shigetoku are also being considered.
As the CDP prepares for a leadership transition, all eyes are on the upcoming election which will shape the future of the party and its role in Japanese politics.
