‘Bots spread Coolock disinfo on X’

A recent investigation by Global Witness has revealed the presence of bot-like accounts on X engaging in online discussions about anti-migrant protests in Coolock, Co Dublin. These accounts spread xenophobic sentiments, conspiracy theories, and used hashtags like #IrelandbelongstotheIrish.

Despite the focus on Irish protests, the investigation found that none of these accounts were actually located in Ireland. Global Witness also identified 45 bot accounts active during the UK general election, which later shifted focus to global events like the Coolock protests and political incidents in the US.

These accounts generated over four billion views by posting about racism, conspiracies, and climate change denial. Global Witness reached out to X for comment on the findings, but received no response.

Campaign Leader Ava Lee emphasized the importance of addressing inauthentic activity on social media platforms to prevent the spread of hate and misinformation. The group is calling on X to improve moderation efforts to combat divisive content.
