Berlin pays tribute to Warsaw Uprising with historic gesture

Berlin Hoists Polish Flag in Honor of Warsaw Uprising Anniversary

On August 1st, Berlin made history by raising the Polish flag in front of the City Hall for the first time, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. Despite the absence of sirens, a meaningful tribute was paid at 5 PM with a minute of silence, resistance poetry, and the proud waving of the Polish flag in the German capital.

The #63Tage project, initiated by the Polish-German House and the German Institute for Polish Affairs, aims to educate Berliners about the events of the Warsaw Uprising. With exhibitions, readings, discussions, films, and art projects scheduled from July to October, the project sheds light on the 63-day struggle of Warsaw residents against German occupation. Poems by Anna Świrszczyńska, a nurse during the uprising, translated into German by Peter Oliver Loew, are featured in the program to honor the partnership between Warsaw and Berlin.
