Zhoghovurd newspaper from the Republic of Armenia reported that the parliamentary opposition is planning to propose the creation of a National Assembly committee in September. This new investigative committee will focus on examining the police’s actions during a demonstration by the Tavush for the Homeland movement on June 12.
During the rally, law enforcement used various special measures, including sound grenades and the prohibited Zarya 3 type. Shortly after the incident, Minister of Health Anahit Avanesyan made a controversial decision to change the permissible standards for the use of special measures, including the use of Zarya 3.
The opposition is currently working on a petition to establish the investigative committee, which will be presented at the beginning of the autumn session at the NA. However, approval from the ruling party will be necessary to move forward with the proposal, posing a potential challenge.
Given Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s support of the police’s actions during the demonstration, it is uncertain whether the ruling party will support the committee’s formation. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
