Join the fight to support independent journalism in Ukraine. The U.S. recently announced a pause in assistance to Georgia, totaling more than $95 million, due to the country’s undemocratic foreign agents bill. This decision comes after a full review of the U.S. relationship with Georgia, initiated in May following the passage of the controversial bill.
The U.S. has imposed sanctions on Georgian government officials and indefinitely postponed joint military exercises. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized that Georgia’s actions are incompatible with EU and NATO membership norms. He stated that assistance benefiting the Georgian people will continue.
In parallel, the EU froze 30 million euros in defense sector funding for Georgia, halting the country’s EU accession process. The passing of the foreign agents bill led to a deterioration in relations with Tbilisi.
Amidst these developments, another Georgian volunteer fighter was killed in Ukraine, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the region.
