The United States announces plea agreements with three Guantanamo detainees, including alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.
The Pentagon revealed that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Walid bin Attash, and Mustafa al-Hawsawi have reached plea agreements, with the trio reportedly set to plead guilty in exchange for life sentences instead of facing the death penalty.
Legal proceedings for the three men, accused of orchestrating the 9/11 attacks, have been stalled for years, but these recent deals mark a significant breakthrough in the case.
The attacks on September 11, 2001, resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people and triggered the US-led “war on terror,” with military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and ongoing efforts against extremist groups in the Middle East.
The use of torture during interrogation has been a contentious issue in trying the detainees at Guantanamo, with concerns over evidence admissibility. The military commissions at Guantanamo were established to prosecute those involved in the September 11 attacks beyond US criminal law jurisdiction.
With the plea agreements, the long-awaited trial has been avoided, bringing the prospect of closure to the Guantanamo chapter one step closer.
