US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently announced the suspension of a $95 million aid program to Georgia following the country’s adoption of the controversial law on “foreign agents.” This decision came after a comprehensive review of bilateral cooperation between the US and Georgia. Despite the pause in aid directly benefiting the Georgian government, the US reaffirmed its commitment to supporting programs that benefit the Georgian people.
The law, similar to Russian legislation, triggered protests and condemnation from Georgia’s Western partners. It requires NGOs and media receiving over 20% of their funding from abroad to register as “organizations promoting foreign interests” and submit public financial reports. Failure to comply may result in hefty fines.
The adoption of this law not only led to the suspension of US aid but also stalled Georgia’s EU accession process. EU leaders have urged the Georgian authorities to reconsider their actions to avoid jeopardizing their path to EU membership.
