Trinamool Congress MP Seeks PM Modi’s Intervention in Jute Sector Crisis
Trinamool Congress MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray recently wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to intervene in the crisis facing the jute sector in India. Ray highlighted the falling raw jute prices, which have dropped below the Minimum Support Price, leading to financial distress for farmers.
He pointed out issues such as inadequate government procurement of B Twill bags, non-compliance by the sugar industry with jute packaging norms, and the lack of response from the Ministry of Textiles as reasons for the crisis. Ray emphasized the need for prompt action to save the livelihoods of 4 crore farmers and 3.5 lakh jute mill workers in the country, especially in West Bengal.
Ray stressed that timely intervention is crucial to stabilize the market, secure livelihoods, and maintain the operational capacity of jute mills. The Indian Jute Mills Association also raised pressing issues at a recent meeting, highlighting the industry’s operating capacity at only 55% and projecting a drop in demand for jute bags.
