Dark chocolate and similar cocoa products are contaminated with lead and cadmium, two neurotoxic metals that are linked to cancer, chronic diseases, and reproductive issues, especially in children, as per a recent study. Lead and cadmium are naturally present in the Earth’s crust, and their presence in soil used for farming cocoa crops cannot be avoided. However, some regions have higher levels of these toxic metals due to metal-based fertilizers and industrial pollution.
Surprisingly, organic versions of dark chocolate, known for being rich in antioxidants and beneficial minerals, had some of the highest levels of contamination. The study, published in the journal Frontiers, raised concerns about the safety of these products.
The study revealed that a significant percentage of tested cocoa products exceeded the maximum allowed levels of lead and cadmium. The US National Confectioners Association assured the safety of chocolate products, but experts warn about the risks, especially for vulnerable populations.
