As we enter into the #EndBadGovernance protest period, activists on the frontline may face some physical or mental challenges. Participating in these demonstrations against the government can trigger a bunch of different emotions, from standing for long hours to walking, and chanting all day, all of these can be very draining.

While it is understood that protesting comes with its risks, the combination of the physical and mental strain could leave protesters feeling depleted once they get back home.

That’s where self-care comes into play. Protesters need to prioritise their well-being so they can continue to show support for their mission. And while protest safety precautions are important, what you do afterward can make all the difference in how you relax and recharge.

Here are five ways to practice self-care after a long day of protesting:

1. Take an “everything” shower

After a long day of protesting, treat yourself to a thorough, restorative shower. This is your chance to wash away all the dust, and chemical toxins from tear gas and other chemical compounds from the protest environment. Taking a warm shower after a long tasking day can help your mind and body to relax.

2. Show your feet some extra care

Your feet have likely taken a beating from all the walking and standing. Show them some love by soaking them in cool ice water, gently exfoliating, and moisturising them. Additionally, you can practice some foot exercises and massages to help release the tension buildup.

3. Eat a balanced diet

While it can be tempting to reach for junk food when you’re exhausted, nourishing your body with a balanced diet meal is essential. Focus on whole, nutritious foods that will give you energy. A typical Nigerian balanced diet meal might include jollof rice with chicken, Efo riro, zobo drink and so on.

4. Exercise, but don’t overdo it

You can release tension and boost your mood by engaging in light exercises like yoga or cardio. But don’t feel pressured to push yourself too hard. This is a time for relaxation, not intense physical activity.

5. Rest your body

Perhaps the most important self-care step of all is to prioritise rest. Allow yourself to truly unwind, whether that means listening to calming music, reading a book, or drinking herbal tea, to fall asleep. Your body and mind need this time to recharge.

Finally, don’t forget that your well-being is just as important as the cause you are fighting for.
