Hamas’ supreme leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Tehran, Iran, at the age of 61. The attack came after the Oct. 7 Hamas-led attacks and amid the Israel-Hamas war.
Haniyeh, known for his role in Hamas’ foreign policy, was seen as a more moderate force within the group. He was targeted by Israel, along with other Hamas leaders, following the deadly Oct. 7 attacks.
Despite living in exile in Qatar since 2019, Haniyeh continued to travel to countries like Turkey and Iran. He was also involved in negotiations to bring about a cease-fire during the war.
Haniyeh, deeply religious and well-spoken, joined Hamas in 1987 and rose to become its top political leader in 2017. His leadership led to significant internal and external challenges for Hamas.
The late leader’s death marked a significant loss for Hamas and the Palestinian leadership, continuing a legacy of struggle and conflict in the region.
