Russian service members are resorting to paying exorbitant bribes to avoid military service and the Kremlin’s involvement in the war in Ukraine, as revealed by Kyiv’s Intelligence officials on Telegram.
The Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine (HUR) reported a significant increase in criminal cases related to bribery in the Russian armed forces, particularly in the Southern Military District. This surge in cases involves soldiers trying to illegally discharge from service and obtain unauthorized leave under false health claims.
Notably, the HUR identified the 8th and 58th Combined Arms Armies as prominent in these cases, with a high percentage involving officials from the Southern Military District accepting bribes for soldiers to leave the combat zone.
The rise in documented incidents of bribery and corruption suggests a growing level of demoralization among Russian troops and a troubling trend of soldiers fleeing their military duties by any means possible.
In a related development, Moscow’s Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov was arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe, further highlighting the pervasive corruption within the Russian military.
