Medical professionals are urging the Nigerian government to address the rising rates of hypertension to prevent a major public health crisis. The low treatment and control rates of hypertension in the country highlight the need for improved healthcare infrastructure, expanded health insurance coverage, and targeted public health campaigns to increase awareness and access to treatment.
The Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, emphasized the importance of preventive measures and early detection in managing diseases, especially in challenging economic times. He suggested integrating health screenings into everyday activities and routine administrative processes to enhance preventive healthcare.
Former Council member of the International Society of Hypertension, Prof. Badsen Onwubere, revealed that despite advancements in medical awareness and available treatments, hypertension control rates in Nigeria remain low. Lack of awareness, poverty, and limited healthcare access are contributing factors.
With Nigeria’s blood pressure control rate at only 28%, Onwubere stressed the need for increased health insurance coverage and more affordable healthcare options to combat the growing challenge of hypertension in the country.
