Global Footprint Network, a US-based environment NGO, reports that humanity has already surpassed its sustainable consumption limit for 2024. This overshoot means we would need 1.7 Earths to support our current consumption levels. Overshoot days occur when a country’s demand for resources exceeds what the planet can regenerate in a year, with some countries overshooting as early as February.
Overshoot Day as a chance to reform
While overshoot days are concerning, there is hope as the global overshoot date has stabilized, suggesting a turning point. However, environmental protection measures must be accelerated to prevent irreversible damage. Germany, in particular, exceeded its limits in May, largely driven by meat consumption and resource imports.
More consumption does not mean more happiness
An index compiled by the Hot or Cool Institute shows that countries like Sweden and Costa Rica achieve well-being with lower environmental impacts than countries like Germany or the United States. High consumption often does not equate to increased happiness, with wealthy individuals responsible for significant emissions but minimal gains in well-being.
What are the countries with the best balance?
Vanuatu, Sweden, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua lead in balancing good lives with low environmental impact. The top 10% of earners globally contribute a disproportionate amount to emissions without significant gains in well-being, highlighting the need to address wasteful consumption and inequality.
