Contemplating Expanding Protest as Government Talks Stall Again

Government Delays Talks with Jamaat-e-Islami, Protest Continues

The third round of talks between Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and the government was postponed, sparking concerns of a country-wide protest. The government’s committee failed to show up, prompting JI to set a 2-day ultimatum for resuming negotiations.

Amidst the delay, JI leaders are strategizing for potential sit-ins and a nationwide strike to voice their demands against high electricity bills and inflation. JI Chief, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, emphasized the importance of securing rights for the people and held firm on the party’s stance.

The JI presented a list of 10 demands, including the reduction of petroleum prices, renegotiation of agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPP), and incentives for the industrial and trade sectors. The party also sought Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s guarantee for any negotiations and subsequent agreements.

As the protest enters its seventh day, JI remains resolute in their fight for economic relief for the masses.
