Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Efforts to Include Historic Forts in World Heritage List
In a recent meeting at the Sahyadri guest house, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed his commitment to including 12 forts that played a significant role in the formation of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s Swarajya in the list of World Heritage sites. These forts, not only architecturally impressive but also steeped in history, serve as a source of inspiration for all.
The meeting, organized by the state government’s department of cultural affairs and Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, focused on the nomination of Maratha military landscapes of India for World Heritage status. Among the list of proposed sites are Salher, Shivneri, Lohagad, Raigad, and others in Maharashtra, along with Gingee in Tamil Nadu.
Shinde emphasized the government’s efforts to revive and preserve these historic forts from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s era. The proposal to include them in the prestigious World Heritage sites list signifies a recognition of their cultural and historical importance.
