The Chinese military has condemned a transit through the Taiwan Strait by a Canadian warship, with Naval Senior Captain Li Xi stating that PLA forces monitored the situation, remaining on alert throughout the HMCS Montreal’s transit.
Li criticized the Canadian government for “publicly hyping up” the situation, undermining peace in the Taiwan Strait. The PLA Eastern Theatre Command remains prepared to respond to provocations.
Canada’s Defence Minister reaffirmed the country’s commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, increasing the Royal Canadian Navy’s presence in the region. The HMCS Montreal’s passage through the Taiwan Strait comes amidst strained Canada-China relations.
Despite the tensions, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently called for improved ties during a meeting with his Canadian counterpart, emphasizing the lack of fundamental conflict between the two countries.
