Biden praises prisoner swap as diplomatic triumph

US President Joe Biden praised the recent prisoner swap with Russia, which led to the release of US journalist Evan Gershkovich and former US marine Paul Whelan. Calling it a “feat of diplomacy,” Biden expressed relief that their “agony” had come to an end. The deal, which resulted in the freedom of 16 individuals, including US citizens, Germans, and Russians, was lauded by President Biden.

However, Biden criticized the Russian “show trials” that unjustly imprisoned Gershkovich and others. The Wall Street Journal, where Gershkovich worked, expressed overwhelming relief at his release and reminded that many journalists still remain imprisoned worldwide.

While British Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed the prisoners’ release, Amnesty International warned that the swap could encourage impunity for criminals. The exchange, which included the release of Russian opposition figures and convicted criminals, left a “bitter taste” according to Amnesty. They expressed concern that such exchanges may embolden human rights violations in the future.

Taoiseach Simon Harris also welcomed the release of Irish citizen Paul Whelan, noting the tireless efforts of Ireland’s diplomatic teams in securing his freedom.
