BAIC, a Chinese brand, showcased its Gqeberha vehicle assembly plant to the media, highlighting progress at the facility which has faced delays since construction began in 2016. The plant was supposed to reach a 50,000 annual production capacity by 2022.
Established in 1958, BAIC is among the Chinese brands operating in South Africa with vehicle assembly facilities in Gqeberha. It offers the BAIC B40 SUV and Beijing X55 crossover, the latter being assembled locally.
In 2016, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) partnered with BAIC in a major Sino-SA project, with IDC owning a 35% stake and BAIC holding 65% in the R11bn initiative aimed at job creation through the automotive value chain.
The Gqeberha plant spans 89,000m² at the Coega Special Economic Zone and features an assembly line, press shop, paint shop, offices, a body shop, and a supplier park for local component manufacturers to support production.
