The United States is urging North Macedonia to uphold the Prespa Agreement between Athens and Skopje, according to James O’Brien, the US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs.
O’Brien emphasized the importance of maintaining interactions between US lawmakers and Balkan leaders to ensure North Macedonia’s commitment to the agreement, especially in light of its EU accession prospects.
He stressed the diplomatic efforts to facilitate a path where North Macedonia maintains its agreement with Greece and fosters positive relations with neighboring countries like Albania.
The recent violations of the 2018 name accord by the new leadership in Skopje have raised concerns about the country’s EU membership prospects, prompting interventions to steer North Macedonia back on track.
