UN humanitarian aid is set to reach 2.4 million flood victims in South Sudan, out of 3.3 million expected to be affected by floods from September onwards. The UN, along with its partners, is working with the South Sudanese government to prepare for what could be the worst flooding in 60 years.
Efforts will include providing health, nutrition, shelter, and food assistance to those displaced by the floods. However, more funding is urgently required to meet the needs of both flood victims and new arrivals fleeing conflict in neighboring Sudan.
Although this year’s humanitarian appeal for South Sudan is only 30% funded, with $542 million received out of the required $1.8 billion, the UNOCHA warned that ongoing conflict in Sudan and other challenges continue to drive humanitarian needs in South Sudan. Since April last year, over 770,000 refugees have fled to South Sudan from Sudan.
