Israeli authorities have resorted to brutal tactics, including waterboarding, to torture Palestinian detainees in their prisons, as revealed in a recent report by a U.N. human rights office.
The report disclosed that thousands of Palestinians were forcibly taken from Gaza, often from bomb shelters, and brought into detention centers where many have tragically lost their lives.
Detainees, blindfolded and shackled, were transferred to Israel and subjected to inhumane treatment like being placed in “cage-like” facilities and forced to wear only diapers for extended periods. The report mentioned that 53 detainees died while in custody.
United Nations High Commissioner Volker Türk condemned these acts, calling for the immediate release of the detainees and hostages in Israeli custody. The Israeli military is currently under investigation for the mistreatment of detainees, aiming to shut down the Sde Teiman camp in the Negev desert.
Forced to strip
The issue of detainee abuse has intensified global scrutiny on Israel’s actions during the ongoing Gaza conflict, attracting attention from the U.S. State Department and sparking internal tensions in Israel.
The report also highlighted the harsh conditions faced by Israeli hostages in Gaza and the range of individuals, including civilians and medical professionals, held in Israeli prisons. Despite the report being shared with relevant authorities, the actual number of released detainees remains unknown.
