Trader accused of N4.5m fraud docked in Nigeria

A 42-year-old trader, Sani Garba, faced trial in Kaduna for an alleged N4.5 million fraud. The Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court charged him with fraud after he received goods from a distributor with a promise to pay after sales but failed to do so, converting the money for personal use.

Prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, stated that the offense took place in March at Kawo Market. The Penal Code of Kaduna State prescribes a 10-year jail term for fraud under Section 344, which Garba violated with his actions.

Chief Magistrate, Mr Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted bail at N200,000 with two sureties in like sum, requiring them to be employed and provide tax payment evidence to the Kaduna State Government. One surety must be a blood relation to the defendant, with the case adjourned until Aug. 29 for further proceedings.
