Recent incidents of violence at schools in KwaZulu-Natal have sparked concern and action from education MEC Sipho Hlomuka. Following a tragic shooting, stabbing, and robbery at three different schools, Hlomuka will be convening a school safety meeting to address the issue.
The heartbreaking incidents include the death of grade R teacher Dudu Khumalo at Phikiswayo Primary, the fatal stabbing of a 21-year-old matric pupil at Isihlahla Senkosi High School, and a robbery at Mukelani Primary School where teachers were forced to transfer money under duress.
Hlomuka expressed deep concern and sadness over the recent criminal activities and emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of teachers and pupils. Measures will be taken to enhance policing at schools in the region to prevent such incidents from occurring again.
Schools are meant to be safe spaces for teaching and learning, and the rise in school violence is alarming. The department will collaborate with law enforcement agencies and stakeholders to combat school violence and crime effectively.
