Sudan’s army leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, rejects talks with RSF in Switzerland after military graduation attack.
General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan of Sudan’s military has announced that the army will not participate in talks scheduled in Switzerland next month to end the conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This decision comes in the aftermath of a drone strike during a military graduation ceremony at the Gibeit army base in eastern Sudan, claiming at least five lives.
Al-Burhan declared, “We will not retreat, we will not surrender, and we will not negotiate,” emphasizing the military’s stance against violence. The situation has escalated over the past year, leading to a significant displacement crisis and thousands of casualties.
The rejection of talks follows RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo’s willingness to participate in negotiations co-hosted by the US and Saudi Arabia. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sudan had previously stated conditions for engagement, including the withdrawal and cessation of RSF expansion.
Despite various mediation attempts, both sides continue to accuse each other of war crimes and humanitarian violations, further complicating the path to peace in Sudan.
