Russian Tactical Nuclear Drills Expanding to Include Ukraine Forces

The Russian defense ministry has initiated the third stage of drills concentrating on the use of tactical nuclear weapons while engaging forces involved in the special military operation in Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin ordered these exercises in response to perceived threats from Western nations. The drills are being carried out in Russia’s central and southern military districts, with the Southern Military District serving as the command center for the offensive in Ukraine.

This phase of drills involves training military personnel on the Iskander-M missile systems and various aircraft, along with equipping missile systems and aircraft with special ammunition. Since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Putin has hinted at the potential use of nuclear weapons. In July 2023, Russia deployed tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus, which borders Ukraine.

In a separate incident, Russia conducted a significant kamikaze drone attack on Kyiv, Ukraine, with Kyiv City State Administration reporting nearly 11,500 people seeking shelter in subway stations. The Ukrainian Air Force successfully intercepted all drones and missiles, preventing any casualties.
