In a surprising turn of events, pro-Trump GOP candidate Jeff Zink emerged victorious in Tuesday’s primary in Arizona’s heavily Democratic 3rd Congressional District. Zink, a familiar face from the 2022 race, defeated newcomer Jesús David Mendoza, positioning himself as the more conservative choice.
Despite the win, Zink faces an uphill battle in the predominantly Latino and Hispanic district, which includes parts of Phoenix. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report ranks it D+24, making it one of Arizona’s most left-leaning areas.
The seat became available due to the upcoming departure of Rep. Ruben Gallego, who is vying for a Senate position. The Democratic stronghold has the potential to shift dynamics in the region, especially as the 2024 elections approach.
As Gallego moves on to new challenges, the spotlight now turns to the future of Arizona’s political landscape, with differing ideologies clashing in this diverse and critical battleground.
