President Cyril Ramaphosa has recently approved legislation that reinforces the autonomy and operational freedom of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid). The Independent Police Investigative Directorate Amendment Act grants Ipid the authority to investigate serious alleged offenses committed by police officers, regardless of whether they are on or off duty.
According to the Presidency, this new law is the result of a comprehensive evaluation of the main Ipid Act of 2011, which was initiated by the Civilian Secretariat for Police Service. The secretariat is responsible for advising the Minister of Police on policy matters, conducting research, developing departmental policies, overseeing the police force, and engaging with external stakeholders on crime prevention and law enforcement issues.
The amended law solidifies the independence and impartiality of Ipid, emphasizing that the directorate must carry out its duties without bias or influence. This move aims to ensure that Ipid can fulfill its mandate effectively and without undue interference.
