Ion Creanga, the head of the Parliament’s legal department, is the focus of the investigation for allegedly transmitting information to the Russian embassy in Chisinau.
Tensions between Moscow and Chisinau have been escalating, with Moldovan officials accusing Russia of election interference. Moldova recently expelled Russian diplomats and embassy staff due to alleged unfriendly actions. In a separate development, it was revealed that a former chief of the Moldovan army’s General Staff was working as an informant for Russian military intelligence.
Moldova’s President Maia Sandu, facing reelection, has a referendum on the country’s accession to the EU scheduled for October. The situation remains tense as fears grow that Russia’s conflict in Ukraine could spill into Moldova through Transnistria.
