Support Independent Journalism in Ukraine
Join us in this fight to support independent journalism in Ukraine. Russia recently used distracting drones in a mass attack on Ukraine, aiming to probe air defenses rather than destroy targets. Ukraine’s military intelligence spokesperson reported that all 89 drones and one missile used in the attack were shot down.
The attack on Kyiv involved over 40 drones being destroyed. These distracting drones do not have an explosive part, and their goal is to exhaust and explore air defense systems. Despite these challenges, Ukraine’s defense forces have effectively countered such tactics.
Furthermore, Russian troops introduced a new type of drone called Gerbera during the attack. These drones are a cheaper version of the Shahed-type attack drones. Ukraine, with its production capacity of over 3 million drones a year, requires financing from foreign partners to continue its defense efforts.
Ukraine’s military intelligence spokesperson also mentioned that Moscow is now using cheaply-made drones to identify air defense systems and act as decoys, posing new challenges for Ukraine’s defense.
