Supreme Leader Vows Retaliation for Killing of Hamas Leader in Tehran
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has pledged to deliver “harsh punishment” to Israel following the assassination of Hamas’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Khamenei stated that it is Iran’s duty to avenge Haniyeh’s death, announcing three days of mourning across the country.
Haniyeh was killed while in Iran for the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian. Iran has vowed to defend its territory and make the attackers “regret their cowardly action.” The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) condemned the attack, indicating that Israel would face a severe response.
As tensions escalate in the region, Al Jazeera’s Ali Hashem reported from Beirut, Lebanon, highlighting the uncertainty of Iran’s next move. With previous incidents leading to retaliatory strikes between Iran and Israel, the situation remains volatile.
The funeral for Haniyeh will be held in Iran before his body is transferred to Doha, Qatar, for burial. The international community watches closely as the conflict between Iran and Israel intensifies.\
