Hezbollah Confirms Death of Senior Commander in Israeli Attack
Hezbollah has confirmed that its senior commander, Fuad Shukr, was killed in an Israeli attack in southern Beirut. The Israeli military carried out a “precision strike” in Beirut on Tuesday, resulting in Shukr’s death. Shukr was responsible for a previous missile strike that killed 12 children in Majdal Shams. Hezbollah initially claimed Shukr had survived the attack, but later announced his death and his vital role in the resistance movement.
Who was Shukr?
Fuad Shukr, also known as al-Hajj Mohsen, was a prominent figure in Hezbollah, known for his involvement in attacks against Israel and the South Lebanon Army. He was sought by both Israel and the US, with a $5 million reward offered for information about him. Shukr’s death has heightened tensions in the region, with both Israel and Hezbollah vowing to retaliate.
The attack in Beirut resulted in casualties, with three people killed and 74 wounded. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the challenges ahead, while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the strikes as a “dangerous escalation”.
