A recent study titled “Cooperative Societies and Their Role in Empowering Women Economically in Jordan” sheds light on the gender gap within the cooperative sector. Despite their profitability, women in cooperative societies face various challenges such as funding shortages, marketing obstacles, and limited government support.
The study, conducted by the Economic and Social Council in collaboration with USAID’s “Makanati” project, advocates for comprehensive reforms within cooperative societies. Recommendations include capacity building, targeted training programs, effective marketing strategies, and enhanced governance.
Chairman Musa Shteiwi emphasized the importance of cooperative societies in creating job opportunities, promoting sustainable development, and improving living standards in Jordan. The study also highlights the need for legislative stability, better classification, and increased support for cooperative unions.
Director General Abdul Fattah Shalabi stressed the role of the Cooperative Corporation in advancing economic and social empowerment in Jordan. Deborah Smith from USAID emphasized the vital role of cooperatives in achieving long-term economic and social goals.
Despite challenges, cooperative societies in Jordan continue to play a significant role in driving economic growth and empowering women in the workforce.
