Fatima, 54, was charged with disseminating false news, discrediting institutions, and damaging the image of an individual. This move has sparked outrage as her lawyer argues that the charges are exaggerated and unjustified for her detention.
The video in question was posted after the disputed elections, where Fatima criticized Ali, a close associate of Assoumani, accusing the government of “atrocities” and a “dictatorship.” Despite the backlash, Fatima remains fearless and vocal about her criticisms, even anticipating her arrest upon her arrival in the Comoros.
The situation has highlighted the growing discontent among Comorans living abroad, who have contested Assoumani’s re-election, citing concerns of creeping authoritarianism. While the government denies interference in judicial matters, the French embassy in Moroni is providing consular protection while respecting Comorian sovereignty.
