The Federal Government has taken a proactive step by activating the National Emergency Operation Centre to coordinate responses and provide support to victims of floods and public health concerns. The Director General of NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar, announced this at a National Emergency Coordination Forum in Abuja.
The forum brought together stakeholders to review the current flood situation and strengthen mitigation and response strategies nationwide. The centre aims to share information, provide timely support to affected areas, and ensure accurate emergency responses.
NEMA is focused on addressing the predicted 2024 flood disaster with 20 states and 52 local government areas already affected by flooding. The agency emphasizes the importance of public awareness and proper waste management to reduce the impact of floods.
Mr. Trond Jensen from UN-OCHA commended NEMA’s leadership in disaster preparedness and urged efficient resource use to address cholera outbreaks. Collaboration among all stakeholders is crucial to enhance emergency response capabilities and safeguard the lives of Nigerians.
