El Chapo’s son pleads not guilty after dramatic US arrest

The courtroom was packed during the hearing with onlookers and members of the US Marshals service. Joaquin Guzman Lopez spoke in English, respectfully addressing the judge as “your honour” for most questions.

No trial date was set, and the next court date for Guzman Lopez was scheduled for Sept. 30. The circumstances of his arrival in the US were not discussed, and many details leading to his arrest remain unclear.

Reports suggest that Guzman Lopez tricked his accomplice, Zambada, into boarding a plane to the US under false pretenses. While Zambada’s lawyer disputes this claim, Guzman Lopez’s lawyer maintains his client’s innocence regarding any kidnapping accusations.

Mexico has launched an investigation into the events surrounding Guzman Lopez’s arrest. His brother, Ovidio Guzman, is also facing US drug charges after being extradited, while two other brothers remain at large.

The arrests of Guzman Lopez, Ovidio Guzman, and Zambada mark significant victories for US authorities, potentially altering the Mexican crime landscape.
