Tensions Rise in Gwadar: Baloch Protests in Pakistan
In Pakistan’s port city of Gwadar, tensions are mounting as the Baloch community protests against human rights violations and government exploitation of natural resources. The city, a crucial part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, has been a hotspot for clashes between security forces and ethnic Baloch groups.
The Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) initiated demonstrations against enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings, triggering a crackdown by authorities. Balochistan, a resource-rich yet impoverished province, has seen multiple separatist movements over the years.
Recent protests led to arrests, blockades, and clashes, resulting in casualties on both sides. The Baloch demand a fair share of resources and greater autonomy, facing government opposition and military crackdowns. Disruptions to communications have escalated the situation, with prominent BYC leaders being detained.
International bodies like Amnesty International and the HRCP have condemned the heavy-handed response to peaceful protests, calling for a dialogue to address Baloch grievances. Despite the challenges, the Baloch remain resilient in their quest for justice and equality.
