Despite being accused of smuggling millions of dollars worth of heroin into Australia, a 68-year-old man named Barry James Calverley claims he is not involved in organized crime. Upon his arrest at Sydney Airport, Australian Border Force officers found 5kg of heroin, valued at $2.25 million, hidden in his camp stretcher.
Calverley’s lawyer, Phillip Ryan, emphasized his client’s intention to plead not guilty and argued that he is not a flight risk due to his age and community ties. However, Justice Belinda Rigg denied bail, stating that the case against Calverley is strong and the offense is serious.
Calverley is facing a charge of importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug, with a possible life imprisonment sentence. While his daughter offered $5000 as a bail surety, it is uncertain when the trial will begin.
