The U.S. is sending $1.7 billion in military aid to Ukraine, including a variety of weapons like air defense systems, artillery, mortars, and missiles. This aid package consists of $1.5 billion for long-term contracts and $200 million in immediate military assistance.
Following the NATO summit in Washington, where support for Ukraine was a key focus, President Joe Biden committed to sending a Patriot missile battery to Ukraine. NATO members also agreed to provide military aid to Ukraine and prepare for its eventual membership in the alliance.
The weapons being sent include air defense interceptors, rockets, artillery, and anti-tank weapons. The Pentagon will use presidential drawdown authority to provide these weapons directly. Additionally, the aid package includes secure communication systems, satellite imagery services, and demolitions equipment.
This marks the ninth military aid package sent to Ukraine since late April, totaling over $55.4 billion since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. The aid has helped fortify Ukraine’s defensive lines and repel Russia’s advances.
