Toyota Motor Corp continues to reign supreme in global vehicle sales, selling 5.16 million vehicles in the first half of 2024, surpassing Volkswagen AG for the fifth consecutive year. Despite facing challenges such as production halts due to quality scandals and slow sales in China, Toyota maintained its top position.
While Volkswagen sold 4.35 million vehicles in the same period, Toyota’s global sales fell 4.7% to 5.07 million vehicles. The domestic sales of the group also took a hit, with a 32.0% decline to 823,595 vehicles, partly due to production suspensions at Daihatsu following safety test manipulation.
On the bright side, overseas sales for Toyota increased by 3.1%, reaching 4.34 million vehicles, driven by strong demand in North America and Europe. However, challenges persist in China, where Toyota and Lexus brands experienced a 10.8% sales drop amidst growing competition in the electric vehicle market.
Overall, Toyota and Lexus sold a total of 4.89 million vehicles globally in the first half, with Daihatsu and Hino contributing 210,910 and 59,273 sales, respectively.
