The Afghan Taliban government has recently announced the severance of consular ties with several of its embassies in Western countries, effectively cutting off diplomats still loyal to the former US-backed regime. Following the tumultuous takeover in 2021, diplomats working at Afghanistan’s foreign missions were left in a state of uncertainty, as the government they were supposed to represent collapsed amidst the US troop withdrawal.
Afghanistan’s foreign ministry declared that they bear no responsibility for credentials issued by embassies not aligned with the new Taliban rulers, including those in London, Berlin, Belgium, and other European countries. The ministry urged Afghans living abroad to only deal with missions affiliated with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the Taliban’s self-proclaimed name for the country.
Embassies estranged from Kabul are facing financial difficulties, relying on consular fees to cover operational expenses. The future of these ostracized embassies remains uncertain, as the foreign ministry has not disclosed any plans for them.
Since their return to power, the Taliban have pushed to be recognized as Afghanistan’s sole representatives on the global stage, despite facing condemnation for their treatment of women and human rights violations. The international community remains divided on whether to engage or isolate the Taliban government to influence their policies.
