Public health experts are concerned about a new variant of mpox that has been detected in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Rwanda, and Burundi. This clade I virus, which emerged in the eastern DRC last year, poses a threat to the East African Community (EAC) and SADC. Conflict in the DRC is hindering containment efforts, with cases spreading to neighboring countries. Post-exposure vaccine trials for mpox are set to begin in the DRC, Uganda, and Nigeria to combat the spread of the disease.
The World Health Organization has reported a significant increase in mpox cases, especially among children under the age of five. The ongoing conflict in the DRC is exacerbating the situation, making it challenging to conduct surveillance and testing. A new framework for mpox, including the implementation of post-exposure vaccines and enhanced surveillance measures, is being put in place to manage the disease effectively.
