Indonesian President: Progress on New Capital City

President Joko Widodo of Indonesia recently visited the country’s planned new capital, Nusantara, to check on the development progress. The capital relocation from Jakarta to East Kalimantan has faced delays, but Widodo remains optimistic about the project.

The official inauguration of the Balang Island Bridge on the new toll road linking Balikpapan and Nusantara was a significant highlight of the visit. Despite setbacks, Widodo plans to host a flag ceremony in Nusantara on Indonesia’s Independence Day, inviting key stakeholders and investors.

The ambitious project aims to have 1.9 million residents in Nusantara by 2045. However, concerns have been raised by environmentalists regarding potential deforestation in the region due to the development.

While challenges persist, Widodo’s visit signifies the government’s commitment to the new capital, symbolizing a significant milestone in Indonesia’s infrastructure development journey.
