France has expressed its support for Morocco’s claim of sovereignty over Western Sahara and its autonomy plan as the basis for resolving the long-standing conflict with the Polisario separatists. President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that the future of Western Sahara is part of Moroccan sovereignty in a letter to King Mohammed VI.
Despite the UN considering Western Sahara a “non-autonomous territory,” France’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty represents a significant shift in its stance on the issue. This move comes after a period of strained relations between Morocco and France, with French diplomacy now leaning towards a closer partnership with Rabat.
While this development strengthens ties between France and Morocco, it may lead to renewed tensions with Algeria, which hosts the Polisario Front and Sahrawi refugees. Algeria has expressed disapproval of France’s decision, warning of consequences and emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
